HJA5100 Oven And Cooker ThermostatsAn oven or cooker thermostat controls the temperature inside the oven cavity by simply switching the power on or off to the element within about +/-10-15% of the set temperature. Domestic oven thermostats are generally not as accurate as people popularly believe.
There are also often control and safety thermostats which operate in a similar manner but do tend to be preset to a single temperature, for example to cut the oven off should it overheat.
When an oven thermostat is faulty there are generally one of two symptoms presented, either the oven will not heat at all or it will constantly heat and not cut out with the usual complaint being that everything is burning in the oven.
It is easy to check your oven thermostat if you have a multimeter and a little experience with electrical items.
Almost all oven thermostats will be "break" the live supply to the element when the set temperature is reached so, if the oven is overheating your will get the two contacts showing that there is a circuit regardless of what you set the temperature to. And, if the oven will not heat at all, the thermostat will not "make" the circuit to allow the element to be powered.
Oven thermostats carry live mains power and should not be worked on while power is applied to the oven or cooker.
