More Information About Grill Elements
Grill element failures are usually pretty easy to diagnose as, when faulty, the actual element itself will often warp, twist or split sometimes resulting if what would appear to be the element "blowing" but in fact it is often simply some of the powder inside escaping as the element splits.
For the most part grill elements are of three basic designs, single grill elements, dual or double grill elements and split grill elements. The first two types are more common with the latter type, where two elements are used side by side to get a split grilling area is generally only found on older British cookers. Often you will also find that the outer element of a dual or double grill element doubles up as an oven element for static ovens or as part of a static oven function on a multi-function oven. Most often these outer elements do not "glow" red whereas the inner element will, in most cases, do so and this is known as an "infra-red" element.
In general grill elements are relatively straightforward to change however you will require, as always when working on electrical appliances such as ovens and cookers, to isolate the appliance from the mains power for safety. Whatever you do, do not work on a cooker or oven that is live as it is highly dangerous to do so.
Grill elements can also, like many other spare parts, be the victim of cheap and poor quality quality parts which fail sooner if they work at all and also be poorly constructed making them harder to fit. Please see the article below in the related information that
