Fridge And Freezer Fan Motors
Fridge freezer and freezer fan motors are used essentially for two separate purposes, one to cool the compressor and for domestic frost free fridge freezers more commonly to drive air across the freezer evaporator to freeze the food in a frost free fridge freezer. Very often in fridge freezers, especially American style fridge freezers, this cold air will be diverted into the fridge to also chill the fridge.
Compressor Cooling Fan Motors
These fan motors are mounted at the rear near the compressor or motor which will look like a black bottle. If these motors are faulty the compressor can be allowed to overheat and fail so it is essential that these fan motors, if faulty, are replaced as quickly as possible to prevent the failure of the compressor.
Often these fan motors can also become noisy and give off a rattling noise.
Frost Free Fan Motors
These are much more common in domestic European fridge freezers and frost free freezers and are normally small fan motors mounted in the freezer (or at least the fan will be) to blow air across the freezer evaporator which is often referred to as the cooling element, to force freezing air into the freezer compartment.
If these fan motors should fail you will get poor cooling or no cooling in the freezer normally however they are also susceptible to becoming noisy as well, often giving a rattling noise or drumming noise. As this is really the only moving part in many fridge freezers if you do have a noise problem this would be where to start looking for an issue.
However noise can be caused by overfreezing and ice build up so do please be sure to fully investigate any issues to find the cause of the problem. More help with this and understanding frost free refrigeration can be found in our guide to understanding frost free refrigeration
