The thermostats in your tumble dryer control the temperature inside the dryer ensuring that the air stays at the preset temperature for each program.

There are several kinds of tumble dryer thermostat employed and each has a different function but, irrespective of function there are three basic types:

• Normal analogue type thermostat that opens or closes at a preset temperature
• One-shot or resettable safety devices
• Electronic sensors which detect temperature by reading resistance

Normal thermostats will simply open or close the contacts when the preset temperature is reached in the dryer. These are most commonly used to switch the live supply to the dryer heating element cutting the element in and out to maintain the set temperature.

One-shot safety thermostats are just what they say, they will trip once and not reset so therefore must be replaced to have normal operation of the dryer restored. These thermostats should not, under any circumstances, be by-passed or the dryer used without these being "good" as it can be extremely dangerous and pose a serious fire risk to do so.

Resettable safety thermostats will have a small button on them to press, this resets the thermostat if it is not faulty.

In more modern and more efficient dryers the use of sensors, commonly NTC thermistors, is becoming increasingly popular. These sensors read the temperature constantly using electronic control units and offer far more accurate temperature regulation meaning a more efficient dryer.
