Many washing machine and washer dryer water valves are model and even production specific with special mountings and/or special electrical connections on them that may be keyed for a specific washing machine.

Using Universal Fill Valves

For a good many applications, primarily on normal washing machine and dishwasher models, a universal valve will suffice. However, it should be stated that you will often have to adapt and alter in order to successfully fit these cheap generic water inlet valves and that this is carried out at your own risk. As appliance technicians, we use these a lot as they save time, hassle and a lot of money but manufacturers will now often "key" their valves or use weird designs in order to prevent the use of generic solenoid valves.

But, you can save a lot of money by using the generic replacement valves as they are often half the price, or less, of the original valve.

Restrictors & More Complex Valves

A lot of washing machines now will use twin or triple valves and while many cheap generic water valves can still be used this will not be the case is there is a restrictor used, commonly used on washer dryers. You will need to use the original valve or, be brave enough to attempt to remove the restrictor from the old water valve and refit it to the new one.

For dishwashers there are many that will have a pressure chamber on the top of the valve and, for these, the original water valve must be used
