When replacing washing machine or washer dryer motor carbon brushes in your washing machine it is important to remember that in many cases that they've been spinning around on that piece of copper in the motor called the "armature" for some time. That copper takes a beating from that abrasive action. It gets pitted and worn so when you replace the carbon brushes we do recommend that you also clean this with what we refer to in the trade as a "comm stick" which is a stick of abrasive material specifically designed to clean this part of the motor without any damage.
