Affresh Power Puck Affresh has been developed by microbiology scientists at Whirlpool to combat the build up of residues inside todays high efficiency front loading washing machines. However, unlike bleach based products which will typically mask the residue's effects, Affresh actually removes the residues using surfactant chemistry cutting down on bad smells or unpleasant odours from washing machines.

Affresh cleaner is a formulated, slow-dissolve, foaming tablet that gets under residue, breaks it up, and washes it away leaving the washer smelling fresh and clean. No other washing machine cleaner that we have seen does this in the same way or is as effective as Affresh is.

The new European version of Affresh is called Power Fresh and it can be supplied as either Affresh or Power Fresh but the only difference is the branding and packet, the contents are exactly the same.

To use simply place one tablet in the drum (without clothes) and run a Normal Cycle (hot option) or Clean Washer Cycle.

Our Recommendations

Why do we recommend using Affresh to clean your washing machine?

Simple, it is fast, easy and it works.

It is by far and away the single most effective solution we've found and, we've seen a lot of these cleaners.

We normally recommend that people get at least two packs depending on how bad you think the problem might be as that seems to suit most people's needs by the time that the smell is bad enough that it's noticed.

Each pack contains three tablets which is a three month supply of what the manufacturer says is normal use though most people need to use one full pack initially to get the smell to start dissipating after this though when the machine when is cleaned a bit is usually okay.

If your machine isn't too bad running through two or even three cleaning cycles with one pack may well do the job.

Sadly however there's no way to know how bad your washing machine really is as the parts that have a build up you cannot see or access. So judging how much you will need and how many times you will need to run a cleaning cycle can be hard to judge.

If your washing machine is smelling bad to start with and, most are by the time people notice the smell then it will probably need all three tablets in one first cycle to get the bacteria build up down and then one cleaning cycle per month after that.

If it's really bad then it may take two runs with all three tablets just to start to get the smell back under control. In a few cases, where the build up is severe inside your machine it may even require more as while each pass will remove a layer of the gunk inside the drum it can take a while to completely clear regardless of what cleaning method you choose, we just find Affresh to be considerably more effective than any other alternative.

Since we are being so candid with the advice we also have to tell you that, in bad cases that the smell can get worse before it gets better. The reason for this is that Affresh will "peel off" the layers of gunk and slide on the tank of the washing machine and where the build up is bad this means that it exposes the lower layer/s as it cleans the machine through. Until you get that build up down or completely removed you can still get a smell from the washing machine, the only cure is to run the process again until it clears.

We have not had a case that hasn't cleared but some really severe instances have taken several runs to get it back under control.

After you get it back under control, regulate maintenance washes or using Affresh once every month or two should keep it under control.

More Information On Dirty Washing Machines

Constant low temperature washing, the increasing use of liquid detergents (which do not contain any bleach) and the increase of washing machines with plastic outer drums that have recesses in them where bacteria can take hold and grow have all contributed to the problem of mould build up and strong odours from washing machines. There are however several things that you can do to prevent this and there are links below to more in depth help and advice on keeping your washing machine smell free.

However there are some simple quick tips that we would strongly advise that you follow to take care of your washing machine or washer dryer.

- Always run a maintenance wash using bleach containing detergent (powder, preferably biological powder) or even better using Affresh once a month

- Leave the washing machine door slightly ajar when not is use to allow the washing machine door seal and drum to dry as much as possible

- Remove and clean the soap dispenser on the washing machine at least once a month and ensure that you also clean the soap box that the soap dispenser goes into.

- If your washing machine has a removable filter check it regularly for build ups of ooze, fluff and other things that shouldn't be there

Following these simple tips can save you so much hassle and they're totally free, all you have to do is remember them to keep your washing machine in tip top condition. While it might no stop other things going wrong, it they at least keep bad odours or smells at bay.

Universal spare partsUniversal spare parts are generic and designed to fit as many different models as possible as well as normally offering a cheaper alternative to original spare parts. However they will not satisfy all applications and they often will also require some DIY skill when replacing.

They are incredibly handy though, especially when you're in a spot with no other option and why that many (if not most) of these spares will be found on almost every appliance technician's van stock.

The reasons for this are fairly self evident, they fit a huge number of products, often tens of thousands of models and they tend to be really cheap. But most can be modified or tinkered about with to replace a myriad of far more costly spare parts so, for field tech looking to make a bit extra even although they spend more time doing this, it's a no-brainer for them.

That's all fine, if you have a bit of skill or are prepared to spend the time on working out how to utilise a universal spare part and you of course want to save money.

The reason we tell people as openly and honeslty this is that we dont' want people thinking that a universal part will be an exact like-for-like swap as often times it won't be. On many occasions it is but we like to let you know what you're getting into unlike many retailers.

To deal with damages quickly please send us a brief description of the damage and include a photograph where possible as this will speed the process up considerably.

  Return of Faulty Goods

You should open all boxes carefully and thoroughly check the goods for damage on the day of delivery and notify us of any damage within 24 hours of the delivery. If we are not notified of damage within 24 hours we are unable to claim from either the manufacturer or the carrier and you may be liable.

If a product is faulty you can return it to UK Whitegoods for an exchange or refund.

Returned items are inspected and tested, please note that should we determine that the product is not faulty you may not receive a refund for that item and you may be charged any delivery and collection costs we incur.

  Return of Non-Faulty Goods

At UK Whitegoods we are determined to go to every length to ensure that you are a happy customer. If however the event arises that you wish to cancel your order, then you may do so in accordance with the provisions below.

You can cancel your contract before delivery, and up to 14 days after delivery. To do this, please email us or raise a support ticket, you cannot do this on the phone or live chat.

It will speed up the returns process if you can also provide a brief explanation of your reason for cancellation and order number. We will refund your money, excluding postage charges, within 14 days of receiving the item(s) back.

Any returns must be received by us within fourteen days of instruction or authorisation to return the item(s).

If you cancel, you must return the goods to us at your own expense. You are responsible for the risk of loss or damage when you return goods, so you should take out enough postal insurance to cover their value.

It is recommended that - for your own protection - you should send the products back to UK Whitegoods per our instructions using recorded delivery so you have proof of delivery. Additionally, it is the customer's responsibility to take reasonable care of the goods during the cancellation period and we would therefore recommended the product(s) are returned with the original packaging in good condition to avoid the products being damaged on the return journey.
