This is a "foamed in" type and that means that replacing it requires some technical expertise. This will involve digging out foam and re-foaming the replacement back into position.

It is not a straightforward replacement.

  About Thermistors

Thermistors are small sensors that change their resistance value in reaction to heat and are widely used in modern appliances with electronic control allowing for more accurate control of the temperature set and thereby reducing the energy requirements in many cases. They are found commonly used in washing machines, tumble dryers, dishwashers, fridge, freezers, fridge freezers and the odd oven or cooker although cooking products are no where near as common as the others.

Which is great, until they go wrong.

When they fail the electronic control will often get an error or reading from these sensors that it cannot understand so it goes into meltdown and will often error out or do some crazy things. It does that as the logic in the board often hasn't a clue what to do with the whacky readings it's getting.

They allow the electronic ccontroller to read the temperature as we said through change in resistance and this can either be in a negative way, so the resistance drops as the temperature rises or in a positive way, the resistance increases as the temperature rises.

Hence we have Positive or Negative Temperature Coefficient therefore the label on each of NTC or PTC. Most in the appliance indsutry appear to be the NTC type.

You can read a fuller explanation on thermistors in the article link given for fridges and freezer but the same general principals apply to all.

Please ensure you order the correct spare part for the model and often production run that you have.

If you get the wrong one it will not work.

If you are unsure in any way at or just want to check, just ask us and we will gladly assist you.

Refrigeration Sensors

This is one of the most common areas where we see problems with thermistors and probably one of the most frequently misdiagnosed problems.

If your fridge has a display or electronic control in it then it's almost for sure to have thermistors being used as temperature sensors in it and, if your fridge, freezer or fridge freezer starts doing whacky things like random temperature fluctuations especially then the thermistor is the go-to default thing to look at.

Some are easy to change, some not so much but we can normally advise on that and, if you need more help in diagnosis or how to replace one, just ak in the forums.

Washing Machine Thermistors

Again, if your washing machine starts doing crazy things that make no sense it will often be a wiring problem on the thermistor or the thermistor that is at fault as the electronic controller gets information it cannot understand.

If you look in the fault code section of the site you will very often see, "Check wiring", that's to check that the connections are all good and secure as well as not covered in muck of some kind as, if they are then that can affect the resistance value that is being read and cause the machine to go banannas.

Tumble Dryer Sensors

These have not proven too commonplace until lately where we have seen an upsurge in the use of thermistors in tumble dryers. Same stuff happens with them on tumble dryers as with washing machines and refrigeration.

Dishwasher Thermistors

Again, not as common to go wrong but they can still give just as described above.

Oven Thermistors

We expect to see more on these as ovens and cookers get more electronics stuffed in them but for the time being they are a rare issue.
